EON Reality Inc., an Irvine-based firm developing 3D software technology, recently showed EON Human, a fascinating software technology which takes a single photograph and automatically creates a virtual 3D face, at the Intel Developer Forum. The technology allows photo-realistic, virtual avatars to be created almost immediately from a picture. The product is just one of a very broad set of 3D software the firm offers, ranging from software for simulating products, to technology licensed through Microsoft's IP Ventures group. We spoke with Dan Lejeskar, Chairman of Eon Reality, about the firm's technology, how it is being used for creating interactive 3D environments, as well as more about the company's EON Human product. social TECH's Ben Kuo conducted the interview.

For those who aren't familiar with EON Reality, what does your company software do?

Dan Lejerskar: Basically, what we do as a company, is we bring products to life. We create the ability for products to be interactive and 3D, where you can see them, and try them without having a product physically in front of you. This capability is predominately for sales and marketing, but can also be used for training, support, and maintenance.

Who uses the software, and who are your customers?

Dan Lejerskar: There are two markets for us--the traditional market for us where we have our predominant revenue streams from today, and new exciting markets in the consumer area for the future. If you look at where our present revenue comes from, it is from companies that have complex products, and where you need to see, try, and demonstrate big ticket items. That is focused on aerospace, defense, industrial, and medical.

How is this different from CAD, and what's special about your technology?

Dan Lejerskar: The key is, if you compare us with CAD, is that you have a highly realistic experience. It's almost like a photo realistic experience--it's not animation, it's a real time interactive experience, where the product behaves like a real product. For example, if you're looking at a printer, you can push a button, and it will respond like a real printer. It's a simulation of a real product. In CAD, you only get a wire frame or shaded version, or at most an animated version of the product. The second part, is not only do we have the physics, but we can handle publishing of this environment in everything from an Internet environment to a high level experience such as a holographic or immersive display. You can hold a product as if it really does exist.

I see that you have some licensed technology from Microsoft, what can you tell us about that relationship?

Dan Lejerskar: At EON Reality, part of our mantra is to create it once, and publish it many times. When I was referring to holographic screens earlier, I was talking about the range of screens you can publish to. One of them is a small-sized product, called touchlight, which was originally developed at Microsoft to allow you to manipulate objects in a 2D environment with your bare hands. The inventor is a gentleman named Andy Wilson, and Andy had developed this for 2D, but hadn't found a good home for this at Microsoft. They contact us, because we work in 3D, and it made full sense to have this in 3D so you can grab an object. We merged their technology with ours in 3D, and created EON Touchlight. That product we launched last year, and has been very successful. I do need to underline that although that's a very successful product, it's just one of a dozen different display technologies that we utilize.

Tell me a little bit about these new consumer products you mention?

Dan Lejerskar: Historically, we have not had consumer products, and if you look at our revenues you can see very little from the area. However, recently we have secured some interesting projects within what I would call rich media publishing -- content we use in the high end, but for the Internet. As part of this, under an umbrella we call EON Experience, we create high quality interactive 3D experiences online. We launched the first part of a project we have been working on for the last 2 years last week, EON Human. EON Human allows you to take a single picture of a person, and convert that into a 3D model of that person's head, which is very detailed--70,000 to 80,000 polygons. If you are familiar with Second Life and avatars, in most cases you don't look like the person you are, and it's not easy to create a user-generated 3D model. EON Human is the first step to doing that.

Is this available to anyone, or is this going to show up through licensing?

Dan Lejerskar: A week and a half ago we launched it with Intel at the Intel Development Forum, with their Ultra Mobile PC. Intel was trying to find a hot button for the product. Obviously, with a ultra mobile PC you can do much more because of the computing power, but how will you benefit from that power? They though that the ability to create a 3D photo in 80 seconds would be a hot button for the product, and we've gotten tremendous feedback from that. Our strategy is of course to license it. We have significant interest from the OEMs for Intel, to install a version of EON Human to help sell 10 million units in the next 18-30 months. The other opportunity is more interesting, and we're talking with some of the suppliers, such as the SK Telecoms and MySpaces of the world, to create a richer experience in their environments for socializing. For example, scanning a face in would be free, but allowing for beautification and creating talking heads for a fee.

How much processing power is required to use your software?

Dan Lejerskar: The core technology is equivalent, whether you work on a laptop or a large powerful computer. Everything runs on a laptop today, but you can also publish to a much higher end environment. That's part of the uniqueness. Five to seven years ago, there were products on the web, and there was high end technology, but you couldn't really communicate with each other. You couldn't create it once, and publish it many times. Boeing, for example, will want to use a 3D model at a tradeshow, on a laptop for sales people, and also on the web.

That's interesting, thanks for telling us about your technology. It seems like there's a lot of interest now in 3D.
Dan Lejerskar: "I've been in eighteen years in this industry, and have gone through ups and downs, and right now it's almost like a 3D tsunami. It's the reverse of what people used to experience--four years ago, we had to evangelize 3D, but now, we have people coming to us because they want it. I don't know why people are craving the 3D experience now, but they are"

Traditionally our sales force has to bring the products to the customers location in order to demonstrate key features & product benefits. This is a difficult and time-consuming task especially for our larger printers. With EON's technology we are now able to conduct a sales demonstration, painlessly and quickly just by digitally demonstrating the product on a laptop. It is like having the product in front of the customer and our best sales person on the side to provide guidance. Sales representatives can provide a consistent and compelling sales presentation and cover more prospects in the same time. This leads to shorter sales cycles and increase sales," said Paul R. Framgång kräver mod och lyhördhet

http://www.chalmers.se/HyperText/MagasinChalmers/Magasin298/dahlen.html

http://www.pressebox.com/pressemeldungen/boxid-36646.html

Eon Reality Announces Strategic Partnership With Navigator Development Group Inc

August 25, 2006 - The technology – “Touchlight, which was licensed by Microsoft to EON this month – is software that allows computer users to interact and move 3D objects around on screen with just a wave of the hand. The same technology previously imagined in the Tom Cruise film Minority Report.

Using this cutting edge Interactive 3D hardware and software, Navigator is capable of generating holographic and stereographic visualization of scenarios, terrain and equipment for collaborative and intuitive defense applications. This can all be accomplished at their newly installed visualization lab located in their Enterprise office.

“Navigator is leveraging its defense experience to create a reusable, indexable library of Interactive 3D objects and simulations,” said Al Patterson, president and co-founder of Navigator. “These 3D items will create a virtual object repository for re-use in training, procurement, technical manuals and rapid prototype functions enabling our customer’s maximum flexibility and optimal usage.”

Dan Lejerskar, chairman and co-founder of EON Reality, said the installation of a visualization lab at Navigator provides EON an excellent venue for demonstrating the company’s capabilities to the defense industry. “Navigator’s track record and credibility makes it all the more valuable - we are honored to call them partners,” he said.

Navigator is a service disabled veteran-owned small business that provides support tailored to our clients needs. This Alabama-based defense and industry consulting firm offers joint and interagency program, technical, analytical and logistical support.
As a provider of skilled consultants, Navigator offers innovative, problem-solving solutions for senior leaders and decision makers world-wide to achieve measurable, positive results. www.ndgi.com

Microsoft researcher Andy Wilson has developed a technology that enables users to manipulate computer images with their hands. The technology, which Microsoft calls TouchLight, uses three cameras placed behind a large semitransparent screen. The system compares the infrared left and right cameras, which capture the depth and height of the user's hand movements, with human eyes. The middle camera remains focused on anything facing the screen. The person facing the screen can manipulate the images, which appear to be floating in space, that are projected on it. The system can also superimpose an image on both sides of the screen, and eventually multiple people might be able to work on the same design. Eon Reality, a maker of three-dimensional computer models, recently licensed the TouchLight system from Microsoft and intends to market the technology as a new mode of interactive advertising. "It's a way to interact with 2D and 3D data with your bare hands," said Eon's Dan Lejerskar. "We're trying to find a new way to define things." While Eon says the technology has drawn considerable interest, the one taker so far has been the United Kingdom's Technium CAST, a university affiliate that helps develop young technology ventures. CAST will use the system as a training tool and a method for developing visualization and communication programs. Auto mechanics could peruse virtual car diagrams without touching them with their oil-stained hands, for instance, or surgeons could flip through medical instructions in a sterile environment without touching anything.

Microsoft Licenses 3D TouchLight IP

http://www.techweb.com/wire/software/190900007

By Laurie Sullivan , TechWeb Technology News

Microsoft Corp.'s research lab has developed technology that lets people navigate through 3D holographic-like computer images projected on a glass screen with a wave of their hand.

The ToughLight technology was developed at Microsoft Research, the software maker's arm devoted to futuristic ideas, and licensed to startup EON Reality Inc.

The deal allows EON to build platforms and sell the technology. In fact, Dan Lejerskar, EON's executive vice president for development, said the Irvine, Calif.-based company has sold the first system to Technicum CAST, a research and development firm in Bangor, Whales, which serves the aerospace industry.

Lejerskar said EON will integrate the technology into its existing product lines for aerospace, automotive, commercial and defense industries. The initial focus is on product launches. For example, vendors could use the technology to demonstrate a product or provide detailed views of different components at tradeshows or on showroom floors.

Retail stores could benefit from the platform, too. "Imagine the possibility of trying on different outfits without getting undressed," Lejerskar said. "The technology lets you capture an image of your face and superimpose the picture on various garments to get an idea of how the outfit looks."

The technology combines three cameras to capture motion and photograph objects, as well as projection system with screen, computer, and software. The high-end application will cost about $60,000.

Interactive media gives companies the feedback to measure if the influence on consumer behavior. "I'm not aware of another company working with this type of technology," said Nikki Baird, senior analyst for consumer markets at Forrester Research Inc. "There's an interactive floor display at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square developed by GestureTek and Epson, but that's as close as I've seen."

The technology is similar to the one captured in the movie "Minority Report," in which Tom Cruise's character prevents crime by pulling up information on a glass screen using a wave of his hands. But unlike in the movie, TouchLight doesn't require headset, gloves, or glasses.

Thirty-one-year-old Boston-based technology enthusiast Mike Brown plans to take a vacation soon to either Bermuda or the Bahamas and would find it helpful to see the hotels in 3D prior to making a decision on which to book. "I can also see real estate companies using this technology to give prospective buyers a way to view the property before you physically go to see it," he said.

Microsoft IP Ventures senior director David Harnett said video game companies and movie theaters could also potentially adopt the technology to interact with consumers.

Microsoft licensed the technology through its IP Ventures program, which gives emerging companies a jump start in developing their own products by allowing them to license fledgling technologies.

IP Ventures was launched in May 2005 to expedite commercialization of new innovations generated from the company's significant research and development investment. Companies licensing the IP include Enterprise Ireland, the Finnish National Fund for Research and Development (Sitra), Inrix, Skinkers, Softedge-Systems, Vimio plc and Wallop Inc.

A demonstration of the technology is available here.

A glimpse of 3D in Orange County

A glimpse of 3D in Orange County
http://blogs.ocregister.com/gadgetress/archives/2006/04/

Last night, I watched in awe as a virtual Suzuki motorcycle spun in front of me on a giant silver screen. It was an animated, 3D image showcasing technology from Eon Reality in Irvine.

The motorcycle looked so real, yet my mind knew it was just an illustration. Still, the 3D was so good, I felt like I could reach out in front of me and touch it.

Eon Reality set up a bunch of 3D demos at its new office off Alton Parkway last night. Truly fascinating. I haven't kept up with 3D technology so an hour of my time got me caught up.

Like this car I'm "holding." It's an image projected on a glass so it looks like it's hovering. I'm standing behind it, but I can't see anything in front of me except, a flat car on the screen on the table.

Dan Lejerskar, Eon's chairman, showed me how the company created these interactive kiosks for Suzuki dealers so customers can customize a motorcycle, add accessories and see the result in a 3D image immediately. The next step, he said, is to add a 'create' button so one pops out of the factory and they drive home with it right away. During a trial run among 200 or so Suzuki dealers, accessory sales increased dramatically because people could see exactly what they wanted in front of their eyes.

This isn't limited to Suzukis of course. Eon works with the government, educators, major aircraft companies and small businesses that want to stand out. The company says using 3D helps people understand better, remember longer and decide faster.

I'm hoping to look into this more, and this is just an FYI to curious readers. Check out Eon Reality. The company recently decided to make its low-end 3D software kit free to anyone. Read more about it HERE. There's also a free viewer on the site. If you want to see some of the company work sans 3D glasses, take a look at its online demos. You'll need the Eon's free viewer to see this.

Article - Money - Eon Technology puts holograms at hand

Eon's specialty is 3-D, but it was founded on a different type of vision – an insight into where technology is heading – which is crucial for innovative entrepreneurs. In 1999, for Eon co-founders Dan Lejerskar and Mats W. Johansson, that meant buying the rights to early-stage 3-D software for PCs, betting that the power of personal computers would grow fast enough to make the gamble pay off.
